Self Help: How to Conquer Fear (part 3)
Defeat Helplessness Using Self-Help
Creating confidence when you have learned helplessness means developing optimism with respect to your goal.
Optimism is the art of finding hope.
Top performers are very skilled at finding hope in bleak circumstances. You find
hope by finding legitimate reasons to convince yourself that whatever problem you are facing is temporary. A
Simple Example
Let's imagine you make a mistake and lose an
important client. If you use optimism, you'll find a
genuine reason why the negative event is temporary.
You might say, "I'm going to discover why he
left and fix the problem so I don't lose any more
clients."
Optimism is not positive thinking. Positive thinking is trying to find a benefit in the setback.
If you use positive thinking, you'll try to find an
advantage in the situation. You might say, "I'm
glad he left because I didn't have time to deal with
my full client load anyway." Positive
thinking is an excellent self-help strategy for
improving your mood. The problem with it is that a)
sometimes you're faced with a negative situation
that really does not have any advantages and b) it
does not give you hope that the obstacle you are
facing is surmountable.
I'll talk to you again soon.
Your friend,
Lisa Brown
