Self Help: Move People to Action at Work (part 1)

To truly reach your potential as a leader, you need to learn how to move your colleagues, boss, and customers to action.

The most effective self-help strategy for this is called "Ask and you shall receive."

Self Help: Ask and You Shall Receive

"Ask and you shall receive" is simple in theory, yet hard to put into practice. It means giving others the benefit of the doubt when they are procrastinating or withholding what you want. Assume people don't know what you want, and ask them for it in a friendly, low-key way. To execute this strategy, you need to get really good at making requests.

The key to making a request is to state it like a question.

Here are some solid requests:

"Would you please arrive by 8:00 a.m. sharp for the weekly department meeting? It's so helpful when you do, because then we do not have to repeat our progress report."

"Can you please let me know what you liked about my presentation? Your positive feedback is really motivating to me."

"Would you be able to quietly listen to me for the next few minutes? I'm troubled by something at work and I'd like to talk about it."

Most of us are quite poor at this. What we're really good at is complaining. We say things like, "I wish you were more positive", "You're always late," or, "You don't appreciate me."

I'll talk to you again soon.

Your friend,
Lisa B.
